Est. 1987 · Third Ward, Houston TX
Soul food rooted in love, memory, and generations of Black Southern tradition. Every plate tells a story that started in somebody's grandmother's kitchen.
Our Story
Born and raised in the Third Ward, Mama Jewell learned everything she knew standing on a step stool next to her grandmother. When she opened this kitchen in 1987, she wasn't trying to start a business. She was trying to feed her neighborhood.
Thirty-six years later, nothing has changed. The oxtails still take three hours. The cornbread still comes out of a cast iron skillet. And every Sunday, the line still starts before we open the door.

What Houston Says
"I've been coming here since I was a child with my grandfather. The oxtails taste exactly the same as they did thirty years ago. That's not an accident — that's love."
"Moved to Houston two years ago and didn't feel like I had a home-cooked meal until I found Mama Jewell's. The smothered pork chops are everything my mama used to make."
"We hired them for my father's repast. 200 people. Every single one of them asked me who did the food. This kitchen does not play around. Booked them again for Thanksgiving."
